It is so easy for us as Christians to get caught up in the routines and activities of Church life. We come to meetings, we get involved in various roles within the fellowship, we try to lend a helping hand where it is needed and we go away with a sense of satisfaction that we have done our bit to support and advance the kingdom of Christ here on earth.

We give our resources and time and we pray for our families, our community, our country, the Church, as well as others we know who need our prayers. In other words, we are model Christians worth emulating.  While all these are commendable, God wants us to know that there is more!

In Luke 10: 1-12. Jesus sends out 72 disciples ahead in pairs to all the towns he planned to visit. When they came back, they were ecstatic at the things they experienced and could not wait to share their experiences with Jesus (v17)

“When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”

Imagine a child excitedly pointing to the sky and exclaiming to his father who is a Pilot, "Look dad! An aeroplane! Isn't that awesome?"  Some fathers would fake excitement just to make the child happy while others would just smile but they would not feel the same excitement like the child because they know there is more than just seeing an airplane flying in the skies.

Jesus did not respond the way the disciples expected, he let them know that what they had seen was not news to Him and that all they accomplished was as a result of the authority He had given to them. (V18) He however admonished them not to get carried away by all those experiences but to rejoice that there names were written in heaven (in other words, there is more!)

John 21 is a portion of scripture which has been a bit baffling to scholars. It was not immediately apparent why Peter and co went back to fishing when Jesus told them to wait for Him. Did they think that was the end of the story and decided to go back to their previous lives? Were they uncertain about what to do and just decided to fill the time with activity? Or did the need to eat drive them to back to the only trade they knew?

Whatever the reason was, it was apparent that the disciples did what they thought was right at that time. They were together, probably chatting about the past and wondering about the future. Peter gets up and says, “I am going fishing” (v3) The others jumped up and said, “We’ll come too”.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be an exercise in futility. They had forgotten the lesson Jesus taught them earlier, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

By morning, they returned exhausted and probably dejected that they did not catch any fish. Such was their state that they did not even recognise the Lord when they met him at the beach and he asked them, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” (John 21:5) “No” they replied.

I am surprised that they were civil in their response. Wasn’t it apparent from their empty boat that they hadn’t caught anything? Was this man trying to mock them and rub it in their faces that they went on a failed fishing trip?

Then the Lord asked them to throw their nets to a specific location. When they did, they had so much fish they could not haul in the net. It was at that point that one of them recognised the person speaking to them was Jesus. They thought they caught nothing but with God, there is more!

Whatever God has called you to do, be assured that God has more in store for you. You can never run out of resources because His resources are limitless. God’s business is never-ending; the more you accomplish in His name, the more He is willing and ready to move you forward to greater heights and greater purposes.

God is calling you and I into more of Him but we need to earnestly seek Him. When we stay where we are thinking we have seen and done all, we rob ourselves of the privilege of the ‘more’ that God has in store.

God’s grace is limitless, His love is unending and His mercies are new every morning. There is more!
