For several months, we have witnessed what has been regarded as one of the nastiest presidential campaigns in the United States of America. Not many people would remember all the campaign promises made by Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump but many would remember the personal insults traded by both camps and their supporters.

After all said and done, one person will win and become the next President but I wonder at what cost the election will be won?

Making a choice to elect a leader has always been an issue even from Biblical times. It is easy to make the choice but do people always elect the right person into office and what are the consequences of making a wrong choice?

In 1 Samuel 8. The Prophet Samuel appointed his sons to serve as judges over Israel. Unfortunately, his sons became corrupt and were collecting bribes to pervert the course of justice. Although the people respected Samuel, they had no confidence in his children and came protesting to Samuel, asking for a King to be appointed.

Up till this time, Israel was ruled by Judges who provided both political and religious leadership. The people of Israel at this time decided that they wanted a monarchy rather that a theocracy. Samuel was aggrieved that the people were demanding for a king because he knew the implication of such a decision. God however told him, ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.’ (1 Samuel 8:7)

Samuel afterwards acceded to their request and appointed Saul as their king. From then on, Israel had a number of kings under whom the people suffered hardship and pain leading to the divide between Judah and the rest of Israel and ultimately defeat and capture by the Babylonians.

As the American electorate head for the polls tomorrow, expectations will be met as people rejoice when their candidate is proclamed winner while others will have their hopes shattered. As Christians, our part is to pray for the country that the people will make a choice in accordance with God’s will. I know everyone have their own preference and there are die-hard supporters on both sides of the divide but our prayer should be that the will of God should prevail and that the people will make a choice that will be in accordance with God’s will.

God bless you all and God bless the United States of America.
